Choosing your first Haltech ECU — Elite vs Nexus vs IC-7 — a straight guide for Australian tuners

A straight guide for Australian tuners, written by the 2Infinity tech desk. No brochure talk. If you are here, you already know what a standalone ECU does and why the factory computer has run out of headroom. The question is which Haltech to buy for the build in your shed.

Why go standalone in the first place

Piggybacks and remaps do a fine job until the day the engine no longer looks like it left the factory. Bigger injectors, larger turbo, ITBs, drive-by-wire swaps, staged nitrous, methanol, a new fuel: at some point the factory strategy tables run out of room and the safest, cleanest answer is a proper standalone. A Haltech gives you full control of fuel, ignition, boost, cam timing, launch, flat-shift, traction, and logging in one place. Everything is tunable, everything is logged, and if the tune is wrong you can see it in the data rather than guess.

The Haltech range splits into two families you actually need to think about today: the Elite series (mature, deeply supported, huge community) and the Nexus series (newer, CAN-native, ECU and PDM in one box). The IC-7 is not an ECU at all, it is the colour dash that pairs with them. We will unpack each.

Elite 1500, 2000 and 2500 — the workhorse line

The Elite range is what most Australian tuners still specify by default. It has been in the field for years, every dyno operator worth booking has tuned one, and the wiring, patch looms and add-ons are everywhere.

Elite 1500

The Elite 1500 is the sensible entry point for a serious build on a four or small six cylinder. It supports full sequential fuel and ignition, drive-by-wire throttle, closed-loop boost control, dual-channel knock and CAN out to a dash or wideband. On a street SR20, a 4G63, an EJ25 or a mild RB20, it has the outputs you need without paying for a channel count you will never use. If your build is street with the occasional track day and you are not chasing crazy IO, this is where to start.

Elite 2000

Step up to the Elite 2000 when the engine needs more channels: six or eight cylinders on full sequential, extra aux outputs for staged injection, water-methanol, or a proper multi-stage boost strategy. The 2000 is the sweet spot for a serious RB25, RB26, 1JZ, 2JZ or LS build that lives on the street or does club events. You get the same core Elite software (NSP), the same drive-by-wire support, the same closed-loop boost, plus enough spare IO to grow the build without a second ECU or an expansion box.

Elite 2500

The Elite 2500 sits at the top of the Elite tree. Same footprint, same connectors as the 2000, with the extra hardware that competition builds ask for: on-board USB (handy on a race car where the loom is short), wideband inputs and the aux count for staged nitrous, boost by gear, boost by ratio, launch strategies and full data logging. If the build is drag-focused, does staged spray, runs a big single or a twin setup where you want everything on one ECU, the 2500 is the one that will not run out of room.

A note on drive-by-wire

Every Elite from the 1500 up supports drive-by-wire. If you are converting an older cable-throttle chassis to DBW (VE Commodore pedal into an SR20, for example, or a Bosch DBW body on an RB) you do not need to jump to the 2500. The 1500 will drive it. What changes as you climb the range is how many other things you can run at the same time.

Nexus R3 and R5 — the CAN-native, PDM-integrated future

Nexus is a different animal. Haltech built it from a blank page to be CAN-native, to have a proper power distribution module (PDM) built into the ECU, and to remove most of the relay-and-fuse spaghetti that lives under a modified dash. If you have ever chased a melted relay panel on a track car at Winton at 11am, you understand why this matters.

Nexus R3

The R3 is aimed at street and mild competition builds where a full PDM would be over-spec but the CAN-native architecture is welcome. You get integrated high-current outputs for fans, fuel pumps, injectors and coils, a much cleaner loom, and native support for the whole Haltech CAN ecosystem (IC-7 dash, wideband, CAN keypad). It is a good fit for a K20 track car, an EJ25 rally build, or any project where the owner wants a tidy loom that will still be readable in five years.

Nexus R5

The R5 is the big brother. More outputs, more current, more channels, and the ability to run a serious motorsport loom without a separate PDM. This is the choice for a purpose-built race car, a two-litre four-cylinder time attack weapon, or any build where the wiring diagram is being drawn from scratch and the goal is to remove every fuse box, relay tray and body-computer relic from the car.

Nexus is not a replacement for Elite. It is a parallel platform. If your engine is a well-understood swap with a mountain of Elite tuning data behind it, Elite is still the right answer. If the build is a from-scratch race car and the loom is a clean sheet, Nexus earns its money.

IC-7 — the colour dash that ties it together

The IC-7 is a 7-inch full-colour dash that talks to any Elite or Nexus over CAN. It replaces the factory cluster, gives you configurable pages for street, drag and circuit, drives shift lights and warning triggers, and displays every channel the ECU can send. On an Elite it turns the dashboard into a live view of the tune. On a Nexus it is basically the standard fitment because the whole car is already on CAN.

Two practical points. First, the IC-7 is not a data logger in the racing sense — the ECU still does that work — but it is the fastest way to see coolant, oil, boost, AFR and gear at a glance. Second, once the dash is on the car, wiring shrinks: gauges disappear, warning lights disappear, and the harness gets shorter.

Which one for your build

SR20 street. Elite 1500. Full sequential fuel and ignition on the four, DBW if the build has moved to a Bosch body, closed-loop boost, plenty of spare aux for a fuel pump speed control and a boost solenoid. Pair with a wideband over CAN and, if the budget allows, an IC-7. It will do everything a fast street SR needs without paying for channels you will never fill.

RB25 drift. Elite 2000. Six-cylinder full sequential, boost by gear, launch and flat-shift, spare outputs for water-meth and a two-step. The 2000 gives you room for the extras a drift car wants (line-lock, hand-brake input, kill switch, boost cut for angle) without running out of aux.

2JZ drag. Elite 2500. Staged nitrous, boost by ratio, launch strategies, wideband on-board, and enough headroom to add a second-stage spray or a dedicated timing retard channel without adding hardware. On a 1400hp street or drag 2JZ, the 2500 is the one that will never be the reason you had to buy another ECU next year.

K20 track. Nexus R3. The K-series is a clean, well-behaved engine and the value here is not the ECU on its own, it is the CAN-native loom, integrated PDM and IC-7 dash working as one system on a car that lives at Sydney Motorsport Park. Fewer relays, less weight, easier fault-finding at 2am when scrutineering starts at 8.
